ShopGadgetGirl is the brainchild of Heather Lytle, who, while working for an electronics distributor, discovered an opportunity for an online business.

Heather realized that the consumer electronics industry was very much the men’s department, but statistics have shown that women have a strong influence on purchasing decisions. Last fall, Heather started a blog that discussed shopping for gadgets with other women. Her goal was to build a following of women for an online retail business, and although she did not have a huge amount of start-up money, she successfully built her customer base – women who wanted and needed a new way to shop for gadgets.

“I launched the site to act as a department store rather than as an online retailer,” Lytle said. Each product, according to her, makes sense for women. Today, ShopGadgetGirl serves the techie needs of professional women everywhere. A number of the site’s customers include what Heather calls “mommy bloggers”, who she claims have been a fantastic market for her.

When a customer requests for a product with specific features, Heather and her team search through different distributors to fill the need. Heather tells of one customer who requested a laptop bag with a compartment for her cosmetics – her brand of makeup required a particular shaped pocket. Heather herself helped that client find the perfect laptop bag, with a compartment that could fit her cosmetics perfectly. Talk about excellent customer service!
